Lexington Stories

I came across your site while looking (unsuccessfully, so far) for vintage photos of my house, and thought I'd add my ghost stories of Lexington, Missouri.

About ten years ago I was cleaning the house of a friend who lived in one of the historic homes on South Street, which is a part of the Historic Neighborhood District of Lexington, as designated by the National Register of Historic Places.  My friend's home had been a girls' school at one time, I believe sometime after the Civil War.  My son, who was about 7 years old then, was sitting on a piano seat with his fingers on the piano keys.  I asked him to move, he turned around on the seat, and I dusted the top of the piano and the piano keys.  When he turned back around to play the piano there were old bobby pins scattered across the piano keys!

My other story is considerably more recent--last week as a matter of fact.  I now live in one of the historic houses on South Street myself.  My house is a small Victorian built ca. 1885.  I was sitting on the front porch with my two cats and my dog, and as it was getting late I decided to go inside for the night.  My pets and I came in, I locked the screen door and then the front door, and walked through the vestibule and living room into the dining room.  Behind me I very distinctly heard a man cheerfully whistling.  I stopped in my tracks and turned around, but saw nothing.  The whistling seemed to be coming from the vestibule and became louder, as if someone were walking towards me, then faded away as if he were walking away.  My dog heard it, too, cocked his head to the side, and happily followed our unseen visitor to the front door, looking up as if he were following someone.  The whistling man apparently walked out through the closed front door and the whistling faded away.
