Diamond Island is located 7 miles east of Elsberry, MO and 2 miles north of Hardin, IL. On the shores of this island, a large orange-red ghost light is reported to move about the island at night. MAP It was also referred to as Devils Island way back when I was very young. I grew up outside Clarksville Mo. and spent a lot of time in Elsberry. The story that I heard as a kid was this: There was a witches coven that met on the island and held their meetings/rituals whatever you want to call them. They would build huge bonfires on the river bank. It was said human sacrifices where made there. Where and why they made a connection with witches and sacrifices maybe there is something more to the story. There used to be a ferry that took you to the other side of the Mississippi from Elsberry. That's about all I can recall ( age does have an affect on the memory) Granted it is short and probably has no bases, just thought I would share what I remembered. LW Page Back |
