Chesterfield will take longer to get there. B I had never been sure if Chesterfield Manor was actually haunted, nor even that it had once been a retirement home. My friends and I are definitely a fun-seeking bunch and therefore tend to be overly intrigued with oddities we notice. We would pass by there all the time, and would always remark on its disrepair and general decrepit state. Of course, from Olive Street Blvd. you can only see a large, brick entrance sign and a road leading back into an overgrown stretch of property. Finally, after wearing out our discussions of how creepy the entrance was, we worked up the nerve to go back there, just for a bit of fun. The building itself is the exact epitome of what one might see in cheesy, exaggerated horror movies. Every window seemed to be cracked and abnormally dark. The walls themselves gave the impression of just itching to crumble down. It appears that nobody, except perhaps the occasional daring youth or investigating ghost-buff, ever goes there. It is rare that, in today's increasingly urban society, a building like the Chesterfield Manor would remain standing at all, being abandoned, condemned, and ignored for so long. The place itself gave all five of us a distinct chill and sense of foreboding. The mood darkened so suddenly upon entering the property, that we all seemed to stiffen at once. It wasn't that anything scary happened, but there was this odd feeling about the place. We each felt fearful at the exact same moment, and it freaked us out even more when we realized we were all thinking the same thing, so we hightailed it out of there. We never even left the car. I'm no ghost expert, and have always been more inclined to skepticism and scientific reasoning... But, whatever we drove into that afternoon was real, and certainly enough to keep me from ever going back. Though two of the guys we were with that day did end up going back to Chesterfield Manor (at night, no less), they both claimed that that "fear" we we had come upon before was not felt this time. I don't know how much longer the place is going to be left standing (I think they've put chains up at the gate, which would be easy enough to dismantle), so I definitely recommend the trip to any ghost enthusiasts who are in the area! :) C If you have experienced paranormal activity at any of these haunted sites, please e-mail us with your photos or stories to add to the database.
