Ghosts & Haunts In Missouri
                    Cheney Hall Stories

I'm a student at Southeast Missouri State University, and the story that's been told to me by many Cheney residents is that a girl committed suicide in a bathroom in Cheney. As I'm typing this I don't remember how. The bathroom has now been converted to a closet in one of the rooms. From what I hear you can still see where the tile on the walls used to be. It is definitely a spot to be checked out. In the Halloween issue of our school newspaper the haunting was mentioned as a story, and the girl who currently lives in that room didn't give the room number because she was protective of her privacy and didn't want people bugging her about it. I hope this helps.

I lived on the first floor of Cheney for a year, back in 1996-1997, and never noticed anything unusual.  I wish I'd known about the legend back then, since I knew people on the 3rd floor and would've spent more time up there.

I was a student at SEMO around 1975 and saw someone standing on the half-landing, looking out the window of the stairwell.  (We were inside). The figure came up the rest of the stairs and made a right down the U-shaped hallway.    I thought. "Oh, there's so and so, I'll go talk to her.  I saw the figure at the door of the room.   I went to the door and knocked, but no one answered.  Sooo, I left.  When I saw her the next day, she said she wasn't there the night before.  That was when I heard the story that the building was some kind of (navy)? barracks and that someone had died in there.   Her room had an exposed pipe in it, and supposedly the young man had hanged himself there. I wasn't afraid, but I was sure that I saw someone.
